Test your instrumentality tolerance!

Division of labour

The first step of the Instrumentality Tolerance Ladder looks at the basic division of creative labour. Artistic techniques, skills and competences are seen in relation to the distribution of tasks and responsibilities in a project.

Mapping relationships

Based on an understanding of the division of creative labour, it is possible to map the instrumental relationships in the multiple forms of collaboration that make up the project.

Value proposition

Art and culture have the power to create affect and to share the power to be affected. The value proposition can reflect an awareness of the value and ethics of the power to create affects and to be affected, and the dangers of instrumentalisation in this regard.

Mythologies of impact

The value proposition can be tested in a white cube or similar art space that allows critical feedback from peers in a controlled environment.

Cross-disciplinary collaborations

In step 5 it is possible to test and evaluate the contribution of artistic techniques in a cross-disciplinary collaboration and its division of labour.

Re-politicising instrumental relations

Challenging the assumptions of positive change, not by changing the value proposition to fit existing impact regimes, but by using critical thinking to expose the mythologies of impact.

Reversing instrumental relationships

Building a new creative ecosystem may require new connections and building trust in a new network. The value proposition will need to go through new iterations to fit specific contexts and be flexible enough to learn and change in dialogue with potential collaborators.

Collective value

In step 8, trust is built not on individual relationships, but on shared risk on a collective basis. The value proposition makes sense to people who do not know anyone in the project or network. The value proposition can create value for a variety of people and contexts beyond the initial starting point.

Regeneration of value

In step 9, the aesthetic, social and environmental sustainability of the value proposition becomes visible or evident. It is possible to plan and organise around a desired duration of the project. Value can be created for short-term enjoyment or for regenerative and long-term production.

“I would prefer not to,” said he. I looked at him steadfastly. His face was leanly composed; his gray eye dimly calm. Not a wrinkle of agitation rippled him.
